Professor Hicks is spokesperson on several experiments using the
LEPS spectrometer at the SPring-8 accelerator in Japan to
explore the production of strange quarks in reactions on the
proton in order to better understand the structure of the nucleon and
fundmental aspects of the strong nuclear force. These experiments

Each of these experiments is described in more detail in the following
sections.
K+ Lambda Photoproduction at Backward Angles
Professor Hicks is the spokesman of an experiment at LEPS/SPring-8 to
measure the reaction of a few-GeV photon beam incident on a proton target
to produce the K+ meson and a Lambda baryon in the final state. The
decay products of the Lambda (a negative pion and a proton) are measured
in the LEPS spectrometer at forward angles, corresponding to backward
angles of the K+ meson. The LEPS spectrometer covers an angular range
not accessible by the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, and hence these
data are an extension of the CLAS measurements.
The results have been published in the journal Physical Review C,
Volume 76 (2007). These results show that baryon exchange diagrams
in the u-channel cannot explain the results alone, and that final
state interactions likely play a large role at these threshold production
energies.
